Slinky Malinki’s Christmas 1, 2, 3 by Lynley Dodd (Puffin) HB RRP $16.99 ISBN 97801437775355

Slinky Malinki is one of Hairy Maclary (from Donaldson’s Dairy) friends, a black cat who, in this board book, is celebrating Christmas. She is ‘one creeping cat’ looking at a decorated Christmas tree, and then appears at various times in what is a counting book for babies and toddlers.
There are, for example, ‘four
fluttering fairies,’ ‘five teddy Santas,’ and ‘six silver bells.’ After ‘ten
busy hands’ (putting decorations on the tree), the book finishes with, ‘Oh, Slinky
Malinki. Happy Christmas!’
There is no
rhyme or rhythm in the words of this Christmas book, but there is plenty of
white space around the colourful illustrations, with a coloured, patterned
border on each double spread. Overall, the book is cheerful and is sure to
engage many small children whose parents or carers read it to them.
