Splash, Slither, Squawk! is the 95th anniversary anthology of nature writing for children by members and guests of The Society of Women Writers NSW. This book is a collection of poems and stories about Australia’s wonderful wildlife and the various habitats in which they live. Most of the narratives are accompanied by monochrome illustrations by young children.
This book explores a myriad of intriguing Australian animals and their changing habitats due to human impact and extreme weather conditions. Many of the stories create an awareness of the challenges that nature faces and subtly encourage children to reflect on ways to protect our wildlife and care for living things.
Splash, Slither, Squawk! is an engaging and educational anthology suitable for children aged 10+. This book would be a great resource for upper primary school to encourage discussions about animal welfare, land and marine conservation and climate change. Importantly, sales of the book support the RSPCA National Bushfire Appeal and Wombat Care Bundanoon.
