The Plastic Throne by Amani Uduman, illustrated by Kera Bruton (MidnightSun Publishing) HB RRP $24.99 ISBN 9781925227802
Reviewed by Kylie Buckley
When young Denver flushes his unwanted broccoli
down the toilet, it provokes a grand idea…. Why doesn’t he flush EVERYTHING he
doesn’t want down the toilet? And, so he does! All is well until his wise
sister informs him of what happens to the items he flushes. That night, after
he goes to bed, the ocean transforms into comical chaos. Feeling terrible,
Denver sets out to rectify the situation: however, his new idea may possibly be
worse than the one before.
The lively illustrations appear on single and double-page spreads and offer
plenty of detail to keep a young audience occupied. The ‘rubber chicken’
endpapers are a highlight.
The Plastic Throne is a playful narrative about an important issue. The
humorous approach will engage readers while highlighting the need to care for
our natural environment. This picture book is suited to children aged 5 years
and older.
