Michaela Mason’s Big List of 23 Worries

Michaela Mason’s Big List of 23 Worries by Alexa Moses (Scholastic) PB RRP $15.99 ISBN 9781743838754

Reviewed by Kylie Buckley

Michaela Mason is a quirky ten-year-old with worries, 23 of them to be precise! Michaela routinely makes lists of anything that consumes her mind (good or bad) so that she can relax and free her thoughts for other things. Her most important list is her ‘worry’ list. When Michaela and her mum move from the city to Wombat Gully everything is new and different and it doesn’t take long before her worries amplify.

The light-hearted and often humorous story is narrated by Michaela. She uses richer than usual vocabulary for her age, due to the fact that her mother is a copywriter and encourages the use of interesting words. Michaela has even compiled a list of ‘scintillating’ words that she tries to work into conversations.

Michaela Mason’s Big List of 23 Worries is a fun middle-grade fiction novel suitable for readers 8 years and older. Its themes include: friendship, change, worries, peer pressure and belonging. This book is the first in an upcoming series.
