Lola Out Loud (Book 2) #The Recipe for Disaster by Shannan and Tayla Stedman, illustrated by Nicolette Hegyes (Scholastic) RRP PB $15.99 ISBN 9781760974428 Reviewed by Kylie Buckley
Lola is an assertive 10-year-old girl who loves gymnastics, chocolate, her famous eccentric cat ‘Stampy’ and making vlogs for her YouTube channel, ‘Lola Online’.
The school holidays are fast approaching and Lola is looking forward to spending it with her cool and super-fun Aunt Helen, who is looking after her and her brother while their parents are away. Lola and her bestie, Vee, have big plans! However, Lola’s holiday imaginings of waterparks and waffles for dinner are shattered when her aunt arrives completely heartbroken after splitting up with her boyfriend. Aunt Helen takes up residence on the couch and fills her days sobbing, eating, and watching television. Lola makes it her mission to ‘fix’ Aunt Helen and to get her holidays back on track.
Lola Out Loud #The Recipe for Disaster is a humorous junior fiction book written in the first person. Each chapter includes a hashtag title and an abundance of monochrome illustrations and emojis to break up the text. Also, many words and phrases on each page appear larger and in a different font to give a visual cue to young readers to emphasise certain words. This fun, fast paced narrative would appeal to children aged 8 years and older.
#The Recipe for Disaster is the second Lola Out Loud book in an upcoming series of four. The next two books are due for release later this year and early 2022.
