Batpig: When Pigs Fly by Rob Harrell (HarperCollins) PB RRP $16.99 ISBN 9781460760512
Reviewed by Nikki M Heath
When Gary the pig is accidentally bitten by his bestie, Brooklyn the bat, he undergoes a Spiderman-like transformation into a slightly underwhelming superhero. After dubbing himself Batpig and perfecting his superhero outfit, Gary is faced with a genuine supervillain. To fight evil, Gary realises that he needs the help of his friends.
This is a fun graphic novel in black and white, and an easy read. There is plenty of slapstick and gross-out humour to appeal to the target audience. The characters are so absurd that they all work perfectly together, and there are some genuine insights into the challenges of human nature along the way.
Both
fans and haters of superhero universes will probably get a kick out of this
genre parody, as it takes precise comedic aim at many of the familiar tropes.
Likely to be a hit with readers aged 8 to 12, particularly those who prefer the
comic form.
