(The Boy Who Got) Accidentally Famous

(The Boy Who Got) Accidentally Famous by David Baddiel, illustrated by Steve Lenton (HarperCollins) ISBN 9780008334277

Reviewed by Kathleen Grace

Billy Smith, like the rest of his family, has an ordinary name and lives an ordinary life. However, things are soon to change when a documentary crew arrives at his (ordinary) school to film a new TV series, School Daze. Billy’s class is televised by the crew, and it is then that fame suddenly and unexpectedly lands in his life – via social media -- as he reads an ordinary (boring) story about his ordinary (boring) life. Thus, he accidently becomes an overnight star.

Billy and his friends and family are caught in a whirlwind of red carpets, TV shows and albums, and he looks forward to meeting the coolest girl on the planet – Sunshine De Marto – who he reads about in his mother’s favourite women’s magazine.

This story, which is about fame and friendship, and has occasional black and white illustrations, is likely to appeal to readers aged 8 to 12 years.
