Sapling Green’s classmates are unaware
of her unique green thumbs. Due to her self-doubt, she keeps
them hidden at school. At home, she feels comfortable and thrives. Sapling
longs for friends but prefers to quietly observe life from the sidelines, with her
hands safely out of view. She is acutely aware of others, especially the confident
and spirited Wynn, the tree climbing whizz. It isn’t until mother nature
destroys the favourite schoolyard tree that Sapling feels compelled to reveal
her gift.
Penelope Pratley is the talented illustrator of several picture books. The Secret of Sapling Green is the first picture book that Penelope
has both written and illustrated. Her stunning artworks are created using
watercolour, ink and pencil and appear on single and double-page spreads. The illustrations
beautifully support the book’s message by depicting a diverse group of children.
The contrasting endpapers are also a highlight, symbolising the growth in
Sapling’s confidence.
The Secret of Sapling Green includes themes of individuality, diversity,
embracing differences, courage, self-confidence, and friendship. It is
recommended for children aged 5 years and older.
