Everything You Want to See by Kyle Hughes-Odgers (Fremantle Press) HB RRP $14.99 ISBN: 9781760991371

This board book contains all the things that a child aged up to three years loves to see, from a dog and a horse to a butterfly. It then quietly expands the youngster’s universe to encompass more unusual items – ‘star glow’, ‘a bin that stinks’, ‘a tiger in a car’ – interspersing them with familiar items, such as a rainbow, a bike, and a dinosaur.
Kyle Hughes-Odgers’ text begins simply, with basic nouns. He then increases the difficulty slightly by introducing easy-to-understand verbs and adjectives, as well as a subtle rhyming scheme. This natural progression prepares littlies for the complexity of the English language.
Exploring colour and form in his illustrations, Kyle makes use of warm hues to surprise young eyes, and sudden changes in element size to add interest to the pages. Clever details will delight those who find them: the mouse hiding behind the bin, the basketball in the bike’s basket and the apple perched on the horse’s back.
A perfect size for small hands, Everything You Want to See features arresting
images and gentle text. It is sure to become a favourite with babies and
toddlers as they begin to explore the world around them.
