The Tyrell Show: Season One by Miles Grose, illustrated by Shaz Lym (Scholastic) PB RRP $16.99 ISBN 978176129372
Reviewed by Kylie Buckley
Eleven (and a half!) year old Tyrell has high expectations as he enters his
final year of primary school. He is both nervous and excited, and grateful to
have his goofy best friend Derek (aka Boogie) by his side. Boogie has been
Tyrell’s friend since kindergarten and is the only person who knows about his podcast.
Tyrell’s daily podcast, aptly named The Tyrell Show, is unlike any other
podcast because it is imaginary, only taking place in his head. Tyrell’s
podcast consists of his internal monologue, and the occasional guest that
doesn’t know they’re part of the show.
Tyrell speaks directly to his audience about the ups and downs of his daily experiences
and tries to process all that he is feeling. He shares his hopes, worries, happiness,
and disappointments, including the ‘worst day of his life’.
The Tyrell Show is a hybrid of a chapter book and graphic novel. This
fun and humorous middle grade book includes themes of friendship, emotions,
empathy, and resilience. It is recommended for an audience aged 8 years and
older.
