Fionna
Cosgrove is a self-professed fan of the quirky, dark and mysterious, having
been raised on a diet of the X-Files, Are You Afraid of the Dark and Goosebumps.
She has produced a fun book for Middle-Grade readers, where they get to choose
from 10 possible endings to a spooky storyline.
The
storyline focuses on a mother and child travelling to Gramp’s house by driving
through the night. At midnight, a thick fog rolls in and they are unable to
continue, seeking refuge in the mysterious Midnight Manor, with its collection
of very strange guests.
Written in second person narrative, there are some moments which sensitive stomachs might struggle with (relating to body parts and eating!) The narrative shifts between second person and the narrator making quirky comments aimed at the reader at the end of each chapter, sometimes with advice. At the end of the book the author has all the twists and turns explained and the outcome for each one as chosen.
It’s
an engaging, eerie adventure for readers aged eight and over.
