Liz Watson is an Australian netball star, recipient of the Liz Ellis Diamond Award in 2018 and 2022. In this graphic novel, her introduction and start to netball has been written as a fun way to encourage children about netball and share her story.
Liz stars as a 10-year-old newbie to the sport. She begins making diary entries after a suggestion by her school-teacher mother, who feels Liz is “a bit shy” and that writing a diary might encourage her to become more outgoing. She writes about various things: her parents, brothers and her nana, her best friend, netball tryout, school events, embarrassing moments, her eleventh birthday and her feelings about her performance in netball games. There is a Liz Watson profile page at the back of the book.
The
book encompasses themes common to many children in primary years, especially
the importance of friendships and teamwork. With engaging illustrations throughout,
this Junior Fiction book will appeal to readers in the 8-12-year-age range.
