Some Shall Break

Some Shall Break by Ellie Marney (Allen & Unwin) PB RRP $24.99 ISBN 9781761068010

Reviewed by Kylie Buckley

It is 1982, and 19-year-old Emma Lewis is trying to get on with college life and do her best to move on from past traumas. However, a trio of recent murders brings the FBI back into her life. Not only is Emma placed in protective custody over fears for her safety, but the FBI wants her help again, as a civilian consultant.

Three college-aged women have been murdered in what seems to be a copycat case to the Huxton murders. Three years ago, when Emma was abducted by serial killer Daniel Huxton, she was forced to save herself due to the FBI’s incompetencies, so she feels no loyalty towards them. However, she agrees to assist, not because of survivor guilt this time, but because she feels a responsibility to help. Emma reunites with the FBI agent in training Travis Bell, and Kristin Gutmunsson, twin sister of serial killer Simon, who has also offered to track down the killer.

Some Shall Break is a young adult thriller, the sequel to None Shall Sleep. It is advisable to read book one first to understand the background story and characters’ motives, to enjoy this book to its fullest. This novel would appeal to mature young adults who enjoy crime, horror, and suspense novels.
