Joan Chang-Hunt is half human and half monster. Every monster family has a
unique power, and all monsters can steal life from humans to travel in time.
There is so much that Joan doesn’t know about being a monster and didn’t even
know this other world existed until last summer when she was forced to save her
family by destroying Nick, the hero monster slayer.
Now, Joan is in another time and only she remembers that horrible night. Joan is
reconnected with Nick, who gets caught in the crossfire when she is attacked by
Court Guards. The pair then find themselves as fugitives in a timeline six
years down the track. Joan has become an enemy of the Monster Court for reasons
she doesn’t understand, and Aaron is part of the team trying to kill her.
Never a Hero is a young adult fantasy novel and the
sequel to Only a Monster. It is the second book in an upcoming
trilogy. It is advisable to read book one first, to fully appreciate the
characters and their motives in book two. Only a Monster won the
2022 Aurealis Award for Best Young Adult Novel and has been translated into
many languages.
