Guess What We Are Doing Today? by Luke Springer, illustrated by Chris Kennett (Scholastic) HB RRP $18.99 ISBN 9781760265533
Reviewed by Kylie Buckley
Guess What We Are Doing Today? takes the audience into an early years’
classroom where the teacher invites the children to imagine what is in store
for them today. The children respond with a myriad of ideas from riding a
unicorn to swimming in a pool of ice cream. As their ideas and excitement grow,
they follow their teacher on a walk to find out more. However, when the children
discover that the destination is the library their excitement wanes. The
teacher then explains that they can pursue all those wild and wonderful possibilities
inside of a book!
The lively cartoon illustrations are created using a bright and bold colour
palette which would appeal to an early childhood audience. The teacher in the
book is not referred to by name but the illustrations are based on the author
‘Mr Luke’ who is an internationally popular social media personality/early
childhood teacher.
This picture book is a fun love letter to books and libraries highlighting the
magical experiences they can bring to children. It is written in entertaining
rhyming couplets with themes that include curiosity, imagination, adventures,
and engaged learning. Guess What
We Are Doing Today? is suitable
for an audience aged 3 years and older.
