Speed. Barq the Falcon by Judy Wollin and Eman Alblooshi
This is an action-adventure book for
readers aged 10 to 14. The setting, the United Arab Emirates, is unique. The
unusual setting and the falcons, provide readers with a unique cross-cultural look
at life, addressing common issues around friendship and trust they can identify
with.
Ali, an Emirati, and Dylan, an Australian, are
at school together. Both boys are new at the school and lonely. A trip to the Falcon
Hospital triggers the beginning of a friendship. Ali and Dylan decide to work
together to be falconers. Ali dreams of sitting in the majlis with the men of
his family, and Dylan wants to do something cool.
Ali and Dylan experience the frustration
and stress of training to be falconers. They study and practice but struggle to
demonstrate they know enough about a falcon. If they cannot master the skills
needed, they will not be taken to the desert to fly a flacon. Ali’s grandfather
helps the boys and lets them use his falcon Barq. The trip to fly the falcon in
the desert turns into a disaster when the falcon escapes. The boys are
desperate to find the falcon in the desert. They get lost and they must help
each other to survive. They are rescued, and the falcon is found, and the boys
will train to be falconers.
