The Ballad of Darcy and Russell by Morgan Matson (Affirm Press) PB RRP $22.99 ISBN: 9781923135611

Darcy has often imagined the moment she meets “the one for her” during adolescence. She has thought about it regularly
because she desperately wants that magical moment to happen, just like in the romance movies. Darcy does not expect that magical moment to happen at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere after an epic failed weekend at a music concert. But it does happen, and so begins a whirlwind 24-hour adventure between
Darcy and Russell.
For the most part, this story takes place over 24 hours, during which a series of unexpected decisions and events unfold, forcing the two to rely on each other and get to know each other fast. From the moment they meet, there is chemistry and a mutual attraction between them. They both share
parts of their lives, but are they both being their complete and honest selves?
Matson has cleverly constructed a night that continues
to evolve and change as the characters evolve and grow during the storyline. This
must be tricky to do with only a 24-hour storyline, but she does it
masterfully. Both characters have depth, complexities and secrets. And as the
reader gets to know them, they can’t help but hope things work out for Darcy
and Russell.
The Ballad of Darcy and Russell
is a cute rom com story that would be fabulous to watch on the big screen as a
movie. It is suitable for a 13+ years readership.
